Smart meter project

We are pleased to be working with Smart Energy GB to share information about smart meters.
Gas and electricity suppliers are currently offering to install smart meters to households across England, Scotland and Wales. This is part of the government’s plan to reduce carbon emissions, as smart meters can help people to make energy savings.

What are smart meters?

Smart meters are the latest generation of gas and electricity meters, replacing your traditional meters. They measure how much gas and electricity you use and securely share this directly with your energy supplier.

With your smart meter you receive a portable in-home display, which shows you how much energy you’re using and how much it costs in near real time.

Benefits of having a smart meter

  • You can see how much gas or electricity you’re using, and how much money you’re spending.
  • You’ll be more in control as you can monitor your energy use on a daily basis. Your bills will show the exact amount you’ve spent, so there are no more estimated bills and you only pay for the energy you use.
  • The smart meter tells your supplier how much energy you use, so you don’t have to provide meter readings yourself or have someone come and read them for you.
  • If you’re a smart prepay customer, you can top up by computer or mobile phone.
