Supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in Bristol

Our vision is of a Bristol where everyone can participate in all aspects of life in the city, whatever their level of hearing. The majority of our staff and trustees are Deaf or Hard of Hearing themselves and we fully understand the impact of living with Hearing Loss. We can share experiences and provide practical information and advice on dealing with the challenges hearing loss brings.
We’re here for all Deaf or Hard of Hearing people in the Bristol area, as well as their friends and families. Professionals working in this field and anyone interested in finding out more about Hearing Loss are very welcome to contact us for information too. Please visit our What’s Happening pages or get in touch to find out more!

Equipment Service

Listening aid equipment for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people

We provide an equipment service for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people living in Bristol, which is funded by Bristol City Council. We have a range of listening aid equipment, which can help keep you independent and more connected at home. This includes items such as amplified or flashing doorbells, amplified telephones and TV listening devices. Depending on eligibility*, some products are free of charge and others are available to buy.

If you know people who would benefit from our service and would like to share information with them, please click here to download a PDF of our Equipment Service leaflet.

If you are Deaf of Hard of Hearing, you may also be entitled to free equipment fitted by the fire service.  The fire service can provide:

  • Bellman’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors – with vibrating pads
  • Fire Angel deaf alarms sets: smoke, heat and carbon monoxide
  • Bedding sets: single, double and king-size sets of bedding; fitted sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases; flame retardant blankets
  • Lockable letter boxes
  • Flame retardant spray for carpets and furniture

Please ask us for more information.

Deaf People Together: Paul’s story

Centre for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People are always keen to gather feedback from our community and we were fortunate enough to capture this lovely video of Paul, a deaf Bristol resident, talking about the impact CfD’s work has had in recent years.

Paul touches upon the difficulty and isolation experienced by the deaf community when the Deaf Club in Kings Square closed, further intensified by the Covid pandemic. Paul’s story is one of hope – how he reconnected with old friends, gained the confidence to join a walking football group, goes to CfD events on a regular basis – all of which he says are extremely important, not just for himself but for the deaf community as a whole.
